Fulbright Research Program for South African Scholars to study in US
The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP) offers South African university faculty and research professionals the prestigious opportunity to conduct research at U.S. academic or research institutions. Grants support projects aimed at strengthening academic programs and curricula at home institutions in South Africa.
Successful candidates will engage in collaborative, cutting-edge research, benefiting from institutional resources, scholarly networks, and international academic exchange. The program fosters intellectual and cultural exchange and contributes to global knowledge sharing.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Hold a PhD or terminal degree in their field
- Have at least 3 years of university teaching experience and a strong publication record
- Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident (minimum 5 years)
- Not hold dual S.A./U.S. citizenship
- Have no previous Fulbright Scholar Grant or limited U.S. academic experience
- Not be applying for doctoral dissertation research or general travel grants
- Be proficient in English (TOEFL not required)
- Be in good health (medical history form required upon selection)

Application Requirements

- Submit a well-structured research proposal (methodology must be clearly explained)
- Upload three confidential letters of reference (submitted directly by referees online)
- Include a Letter of Invitation from a U.S. host institution (strongly encouraged)
- Updated CV with scholarly achievements
- Previous applicants must submit updated proposals, CVs, and references
