CSIR Cyber Security Internships

The CSIR has internship opportunities in the South African National Research Network (SANReN) programme within the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS), which is hosted by the Next Generation Enterprises and Institution cluster.

The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products under the guidance of researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams.

Key responsibilities:

Under supervision, the Intern will be required to:

  • Develop and maintain an in-depth and working knowledge of cybersecurity technologies, threats, vulnerabilities concepts and controls, including appropriate countermeasures, and advising on cybersecurity best practices and recommendations;
  • Support the software development initiatives of the Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) group.
  • Support system administration, such as installation, configuration, and maintenance of CSIRT security systems and cyberinfrastructure;
  • Monitor security risks and investigate suspicious ICT security events;
  • Provide cybersecurity incident response support to the Senior CSIRT members when required;
  • Contribute to the design of best practices, recommendations, playbooks, and awareness training for SANReN beneficiaries;
  • Attend technical and on-the-job training as required;
  • Contribute to the cybersecurity body of knowledge by participating in relevant conferences, symposiums, training events, etc.
  • Provide technical support to SANReN staff.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer/electronic engineering, computer science, information technology or related fields;
  • Certification in CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+ will be advantageous;
  • Background in cyber security, information security, software development, and/or networking;
  • Practical knowledge of related programming languages such as Python, scripting and the Linux operating system;
  • Knowledge and exposure in software development and system administration;
  • Good understanding of cybersecurity concepts and protocols;
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people; and discipline to work individually;
  • Good time management skills, problem-solving as well as critical thinking.
